This Is Going
May 25, 2021This is going to be my first year at WWDC where I will understand most presentations.
Since the last few years, most of the presentations at WWDC involved Swift code (unless it’s about Metal, or any of the Core Frameworks).
I had take screenshots, try and understand what’s happening and translate it to Objective-C.
Not anymore! I’m now a bilingual Apple Platforms Developer 🥳 and I’ll be able to follow along just like most of you all.
I’m very excited for WWDC this year. Let’s get going!
Elytras Summer Release
May 25, 2021Elytra’s Summer 2021 Release has been one of the smoothest releases I’ve had for an app in recent memory.

I’m glad I got all of this through before WWDC itself. I can not sit back, relax a little till WWDC week, and then after it is over, sit down to plan what’s next for Elytra on iOS & iPadOS 15, and macOS 12.

Since December Of
May 15, 2021Since December of 2020, I’ve started to sleep earlier than I used to. It’s been mostly great for me. I wake up early, get some of my best work done between 7AM to 9AM and I end up with a lot of free time on my hands in the evenings which has also enabled me to play a game or two of Badminton with my brother.
An unexpected side-effect of this situation is that I am no longer awake when the apps I submit to the App Store for review go into the “In Review” state, get approved or rejected. I am no longer able to experience that sudden rush of anxiety, wonder and anticipation. 😅
My N Thoughts on Reservations
May 6, 2021Yesterday, the Supreme Court of India squashed a law pertaining to the reservations for students in educational institutions and jobs in state government offices. You can read more about it here.
There has been a lot of discussion about this on various online & offline social platforms, mostly holding the SC’s verdict in bad light. While I'm inclined to agree with them, I have the following thoughts:

Blanket Reservations based on the factor of caste is incorrect. Such policies grant favouring opportunities to those who can easily abuse the systems. My state of Maharashtra has had several Chief Ministers who belonged from the Maratha caste. So it isn’t like the entire community is deprived of privilege of some sorts.

The benefit of such reservations rarely reach those who can benefit from it. They are usually captured, held onto, and systematically abused by those in power by virtue of official position, or socio-economic strata.

The reservations system is often looked down upon by those who are never directly benefited from it. This is always a bad look for any public policy.
I belong to this caste, to this community. I have never had the need, nor ever felt the want to claim benefits under such reservation policies all in due part to the various privileges afforded to me by birth in a family that was able to provide for me. But I also must acknowledge the fact that not all the people in this community are born or come into the same privilege. They truly have a need for such public policies, and they needed it yesterday.
Such reservations should be transformed from caste-based policies to socio-economic situation policies, irrespective of the person’s caste or religion. If we were to have a discussion on this, it would eventually evolve into a discussion on minimum wages, national welfare policies, and basic income policies, all of which still seem to a be a distant dream for Indians as our elected representatives are dealing with more pressing matters (no, not the pandemic).

My N Thoughts on the Apple "Spring Loaded" 2021 Event
Apr 21, 2021I’ll cut right to the chase. This was a very well produced event in terms of visual quality on the live streams. Lots of cool stuff in there, a lot of Easter eggs (did you spot the iPad Nano when the guy falls into his couch finding his keys?)
What stood out to me in this event is that Apple allows… nay… enables its presenters to put up a very professional look whilst bringing their individualistic styles to the screen.
I want to now discuss the new releases (completely out of order).
M1 iMac
Stunning colours. I doubt we’ll meet anyone who does not like any one of these colours. Perhaps a dark grey coming in the winter? 😏
Two of my favourite features from this release were:

The Power Brick of the M1 iMac now comes with an integrated Ethernet port. That makes two cables coming from under the desk into a single one. This is particularly useful where a lot of schools, colleges and offices have ethernet ports under the desks on the floors. It seems like Apple’s own offices were designed this way and prompted for this design choice.
You can also now get a 10G Ethernet port on the M1 Mac mini. Source

The M1 iMacs also come with a new keyboard with integrated TouchID. You can also separately purchase these keyboards (in all their glorious colours) for your M1 Mac mini (or even Hackintoshes 😏)
What irked me the most is that the iMac’s design went back by a decade for its front panel. This could have been avoided completely. The back looks absolutely stunning with the new colour options, all of them. But the front is going to be hard to work with, especially for photographers.
